OUR HISTORY

c. 1946

We will always be grateful to the United States of America and it’s people for God has used her for delivering our home country the Philippines for more than 300 years of Spanish rule and during World War II, America liberated the Philippines under 4 years of Imperial Japanese occupation and granted independence to the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946. But God’s ultimate gift to the Filipinos was when He allowed American Independent, Bible-believing, Baptist missionaries to come to the Philippines and preach the gospel, the good news of salvation, and many heard it, and were gloriously saved!

1953

Rev. Fred and Mrs. Lorene Null were one of the couples who surrendered to the call of God, to go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. They arrived in the Philippines in 1953 and spent 25 years of their lives winning souls, training preachers and workers for the Lord’s work and planted 25 Bible-believing Baptist churches across the country.

After suffering a massive stroke, undergoing open heart surgery, Pastor and Mrs. Null were advised not to return to the Philippines; however, his poor health condition did not hinder his passion to win Filipinos to Christ. During this stage in his life, God led him to San Diego where he discovered that there were about 70,000 Filipino-Americans living in San Diego. With desire to reach them with the Gospel, Pastor and Mrs. Null began laying the ground work to  establish a mission work to reach the Filipinos in San Diego. Borrowing a small building on the side of the Calvary Baptist Church, the Filipino Bible Baptist Mission of National City was born.

1982

Larry Obero was a sailor in the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, a fellow sailor shared the Gospel with him and he accepted Christ as his Lord and Saviour. Not too long after his salvation, he surrendered to preach the Gospel of Christ. In 1982, Larry and his wife, Myrna, stepped through the doors of the mission. The Lord later led Larry and his family to join the mission. When the mission was established as a church, Larry Obero and his family were among the 50 charter members. Larry Obero served under Pastor Null until the pastorate was passed on to him.

1992

As the Lord continued to bless, the congregation outgrew their humble building. In 1992, the Filipino Bible Baptist Church made the move to Chula Vista, California. As part of this move, the church merged with the congregation of Grace Baptist Temple of Chula Vista, pastored by Ken Johnson. The combined congregation came to be known as the Filipino and American Bible Baptist Church under the pastorate of now pastor, Larry Obero.

2003

During their stay in Chula Vista, the church again outgrew their home for the last 10 years. Little did they know that in May of 2003, the Lord would move the church back to the very property in National City where it all began. This time the church would not just be occupying the original mission building but they would be occupying the entire Calvary Baptist Church property.

After the move, the Lord put it on the heart of Pastor Obero to change the name of the church. It was Pastor Obero’s desire to reach more than just the Filipino-Americans in the area. After much prayer, the church shortened its name to Bible Baptist Church which remains to this day. As the church faithfully proclaimed the Gospel, the church grew from a humble attendance of 50 to an average of 500.

2008

In 2008, Carlos Serrano and his family were sent out of Bible Baptist Church to start the Bible Baptist Church of Delano, California. To this day, the church is still proclaiming the Gospel. Several years later, Pastor Carlos Serrano would pass down the work and return home to San Diego and serve once more at Bible Baptist Church of National City.

2018

In 2018, Pastor Obero retired after 35 years of ministry, and Pastor Carlos Serrano took over the pastorate.
